The material decides whether a print is merely pretty or also strong, heat resistant or weatherproof. Below is a quick overview of the materials we print in at KaiForge. Values are approximate – they depend on the filament manufacturer and print settings.
| Material | Strengths | Weaknesses | Typical uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| PLA / PLA+ | easy to print, accurate, stiff, many colours | low heat resistance (approx. 55–60 °C), more brittle, not for outdoors | figurines, models, decor, visual prototypes |
| PET-G | tough, slightly flexible, resistant to water and many chemicals | less stiff, scratches more easily | functional parts, containers, covers, holders |
| ASA | UV and weather resistant, stable colour, heat up to approx. 90–100 °C | harder to print, needs ventilation | outdoor parts, automotive, garden |
| ABS | heat resistant (approx. 90–100 °C), strong, can be chemically smoothed | shrinkage and warping, noticeable odour while printing | enclosures, technical parts, parts exposed to heat |
| Nylon (PA6 / PA12) | very strong, wear resistant, springy | absorbs moisture, needs dry storage, harder to print | gears, bushings, hinges, moving parts |
| TPU | rubber-like flexibility, dampens vibration | slow to print, less accurate for tiny details | seals, bumpers, covers, cases |
How to choose quickly
- Looks and detail? Choose PLA – it has the widest colour palette.
- Functional part for home or workshop? PET-G is a safe compromise.
- Sun, rain, frost? Go for ASA.
- High temperature (e.g. near an engine)? ABS or ASA, and nylon for heavy loads.
- Moving, abrasive parts? Nylon PA6 or PA12.
- Soft, flexible parts? TPU.
